Hiring a painter in Ontario

Painting prices are mostly labour, and most of that labour is preparation. Walls with nail holes, cracks and old patches need filling and sanding; glossy or oil-based trim needs a bonding primer before latex will stick; dark colour changes and new drywall take extra coats. Ceilings, tall stairwells, lots of trim and doors, and rooms full of furniture all add hours. Houses built before about 1960 may have lead-based paint in the older layers, which changes how sanding and scraping must be done, so mention the age of your home when you ask for a price.

Ask which products are included by brand and product line, how many coats are planned, and whether priming is part of the price. Ask how floors and furniture will be protected, and whether gaps along trim will be caulked before painting. For kitchen cabinets, ask about degreasing, sanding and the coating itself: cabinets need a hard, washable enamel, not ordinary wall paint. A careful painter will want to see the surfaces in person or in clear photos before committing to a number.

Interior painting works in any month, though winter limits how much you can open windows, so low-odour paint helps. Exterior painting and staining in Ontario has a narrower window: every product lists a minimum application temperature, surfaces must be dry, and cold nights, heavy dew and fall rain shorten the season. Late spring through early fall is prime time, and good painters book up early. What is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Ontario?
Late spring to early fall, on dry days when air and surface temperatures stay above the minimum printed on the paint label for the whole drying period. Avoid painting dark siding in direct midday sun, right after rain, or late in the afternoon when evening dew will settle on fresh paint. Wood should be dry to the touch and ideally dry inside as well.
How often should a deck be stained?
It depends on the product and how much sun and traffic the deck gets. Transparent and semi-transparent stains wear faster and often need recoating every couple of years on an exposed deck, while solid stains last longer, especially on railings and other vertical surfaces. It's time when water soaks in instead of beading, or colour has worn through in walking paths.
Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it?
If the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works, painting can refresh a kitchen for far less than replacing cabinets. The result depends on preparation: thorough degreasing, sanding, a bonding primer and a durable enamel, ideally with doors removed and sprayed separately. Thermofoil and some laminate doors don't hold paint well, so find out what yours are made of first.
Do painters move furniture?
Most painters will move furniture to the centre of the room, cover it, and lay drop cloths over the floors. Heavy, fragile or valuable items such as pianos, artwork, electronics and loaded bookcases are usually expected to be cleared by the homeowner. Settle this before the quote is finalised, because a crowded room takes longer to paint and affects the price.
